SMSTM Arts and Science College Athavanad holds annual College Union elections in a parliamentary mode, where elected class representatives form the College Union for the academic year.

The College Union plays a crucial role in ensuring that students have access to proper services and facilities, promoting a better academic and co-curricular environment on campus. The College Union is responsible for organizing various important events such as sports meets, arts festivals, and other celebrations on campus. The students’ union plays a significant role in promoting and upholding student interests and welfare, creating a vibrant campus life that helps students grow and flourish. Overall, the College Union serves as a platform for students to develop important skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication, enabling them to become responsible and active members of society.

SEEKHNA Union Report 2023- 2024

Motto: “Growing Together” The Seekhna Union for the academic year 2023-24 took charge on November 3, 2023, with a vision of fostering growth and supporting positive changes within the college.

Oath-Taking Ceremony

On November 3, 2023, the union office bearers took the oath in the presence of College Principal, Dr. Abidha Kurukkan. During the first meeting, Assistant Professor Shafvan.was appointed as the Union Advisor, Assistant Professor Shareef Kalathil as the Magazine Staff Editor, and Assistant Professor Jaseela as the Fine Arts Advisor.

“Arang” – Acting Workshop

The Fine Arts Club organized a one-day Acting Workshop named Arang, under the guidance of Club Convener, Anagha Unnikrishnan.

Union Day 2023

On December 7, the Sikhna Union was officially inaugurated by former Education Minister, Abdurabb Sahib, in the presence of College Principal, Dr. Abida Kurukkan, College Manager, Ahmed Wafi Kakkat, and Managing Committee Secretary, Pallar Khader Haji. The event also included a Fine Arts inauguration by renowned playback singer Sanuja Pradeep, followed by cultural performances.

Christmas Celebrations

The college celebrated Christmas with Carols, Western music, and dance performances by students. Fun games were also conducted, and prizes were distributed to winners.

Food Fest

On December 21, a Food Fest showcasing traditional North Malabar cuisine was organized. The competition-based event highlighted diverse culinary flavors, and winners were awarded on the same day.

Republic Day Program – “Patriotic Pinnacle”

In collaboration with the NSS, the SEEKHNA Union organized a Republic Day celebration titled Patriotic Pinnacle. The event was inaugurated by Malappuram District Panchayat member and Calicut University Senate member, V.K.N. Shafi, who hoisted the national flag. The program emphasized the contributions of Malabar in India’s freedom struggle and the importance of constitutional protection.

“Vayaloram – 2”

The second phase of the Vayaloram project, initiated by the union and NSS, focused on harvesting and discussing the deep connection between land and human life.

Coinciding with Republic Day, Sikhna organized a Leadership Camp featuring sessions on leadership development:

Development Roadmap

To enhance college infrastructure, the union collected feedback from students, identified priority issues, and submitted an official request to the management via Principal Dr. Abida Kurukkan. Several issues were resolved based on these discussions.

“URJJA 2K24” – Annual Sports Meet

On January 27, 2024, the annual sports meet was named “URJA” by Principal Dr. Abida Kurukkan. The event took place from January 28 to February 1 at the college ground, with February 2 matches hosted at Sevens Arena Sports Hub, Puthanathani. Highlights included:

“MERAKI 2K24” – Fine Arts Festival

From February 5-9, the college hosted its Fine Arts Festival, Meraki 2K24, celebrating cultural diversity.

Ifthar 2024

For the first time in college history, a grand Iftar gathering was hosted with support from guest faculty. Students, faculty, and local residents participated in the spiritual event.

Independence Day 2024

On August 14, 2024, Sikhna Union and IQAC jointly celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with a quiz competition, where winners were awarded by District Panchayat Member, Basheer Randathani.

Ad-hoc Union Activities

Before the official union was formed, an Ad-hoc Union managed various events, including:

“Thakruthi 2K24” – Onam Celebrations

On August 24, Thakruthi Onam celebrations took place with a historical perspective on Onam by Malayalam faculty, Saleem Mohammed Shafi. The event featured Pookalam competitions, traditional games, and a grand Onam feast.

Freshers’ Party 2K23

On September 22, second-year students warmly welcomed newcomers with Freshers’ Day celebrations at both college and department levels.

“Vayaloram” – Rural Immersion Project

On September 25, a rural immersion project was launched in the presence of Athavanad Panchayat President, T.P. Sinobiya. Students and teachers participated in planting paddy saplings and exploring traditional village practices.

“Palestine: Owners Turned Refugees” – Solidarity Seminar

On October 26, a student solidarity gathering for Palestine was held, featuring a seminar by Dr. Ashraf Valoor (Political Science Professor, EMEA College). The session, chaired by Principal Dr. Abida Kurukkan, provided insights into the ongoing crisis.
